Royal Roads Heritage Fund

The Royal Roads University Foundation (RRU Foundation) was initiated in 1999 to secure charitable donations for the university’s priority funding needs.

Supporting RRU also means supporting Hatley Park National Historic Site, the campus of the university.

As the university covers the administrative costs to operate the foundation, this means 100% of charitable donations go straight to the RRU Foundation!

The University leases the historic site from the Department of National Defense for their campus. This lease charges Royal Roads with the stewardship and responsibility to protect the cultural and natural assets and to educate the public about Canada’s heritage.

On behalf of the people of Canada, Royal Roads University proudly accepts this responsibility and is embracing the challenge by developing the tourism potential of the site while at the same time creating new tourism educational opportunities for industry.

Despite this phenomenal stewardship commitment, the university does not receive any federal, provincial, regional or local funding to protect, restore and maintain this 565-acre property, complete with a unique array of heritage buildings dating back 60 to 100 years.

The Royal Roads Heritage Fund was established to provide financial gifts for the preservation of this historic property.
In the past year, the Royal Roads Foundation was fortunate to receive a number of gifts:
  • $10,000 to construct customized visitors benches built from wood from the estate designed and crafted by carpenters on staff.
  • $30,000 to upgrade an access trail to make it more accessible to the less-abled,
  • $300,000 to compile a horticultural inventory of the heritage gardens and make this information available to the public at large via the Internet, and most recently,
  • $750,000 to restore the more threatened building on the property, the 1914 Lord & Burnham Greenhouse.
Ensuring the integrity of the cultural and ecological heritage is maintained for future generations, the Royal Roads University Foundation’s Heritage Fund provides an avenue for caring individuals to give.
