The Esquimalt Lagoon

A remarkable feature at Hatley Park

Hatley Park conjures images of days gone by with magnificent themed gardens, peacocks strutting about the castle grounds, and goldfish in the lily pond.

The impressive old-growth forest found on the estate also offers a glimpse into the past. You can still see where First Nations people stripped long strands of cedar bark to make their clothes and baskets.

Completing the experience is the Esquimalt Lagoon, a designated bird sanctuary, historic First Nations site and popular recreational destination. Explore the salt marsh habitat and trout-bearing streams. Learn about one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems on the planet. Marvel at the resident and migratory birds that use the lagoon and nearby forest for shelter, nesting sites and food or simply spend the afternoon kayaking in the tranquil waters.
